  1. Military Roots
    The area was initially established as a military settlement to help defend British interests in Canada following the War of 1812. Richmond was officially founded in 1818 by the British Army’s 99th Regiment of Foot, many early settlers being veterans of the war. From 1818 to 1822, the village was managed by the Settling Branch of Upper Canada’s Military Department and was only incorporated in 1850.

  1. Founding 
    The village was named after the Duke of Richmond, who was the Governor General of British North America at the time. By the end of 1818, close to 400 families, including some civilians, were established in the settlement, making it one of the first large communities formed in the county.

  1. Heritage Buildings 
    Richmond has several heritage buildings that reflect its early history that are still standing today. Two of the most notable examples are St. Phillip’s Church, the oldest Catholic church in the area, and the St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, which was built in 1823.

  1. Strategic Location 
    Richmond is located along the Jock River, which flows into the Rideau River. Because of this, the Jock was strategically positioned to facilitate transportation and trade in the area while also providing a necessary water source to the growing community and surrounding farms.

Richmond has been home to several prominent historical figures, including George Seymour Lyon, who won the gold medal in golf for Canada at the 1904 Olympics, and Maria Hill, a surgeon’s assistant during the War of 1812 who became known as the “Daughter of the Regiment.”

    Richmond has always been an agricultural hub for the surrounding region. In the village’s early days, farmers in the area would come together to showcase their goods and share resources and knowledge with other local farmers during the annual fair.

    Richmond has hosted its annual Richmond Fair since 1844, making it one of the oldest agricultural fairs in Canada. This fair continues to be a significant community event, with games, rides and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The event celebrates the village’s agricultural heritage and showcases the arts, crafts, livestock, and produce of the surrounding community.

  1. Amalgamation by Ottawa 
    In 1974, Richmond was amalgamated by the Goulbourn Township, and then by the City of Ottawa in 2001 as part of a larger regional reorganization. Throughout, it has always retained its village charm and community spirit.
