What is The Best Storage Unit Lock?
No matter what you’re putting in storage or for how long, keeping your belongings safe and sound is essential. And while storage facilities typically have their own security, you still need to safeguard your stuff with a good-quality lock. But which one to choose? Mini Mall Storage has the answers you’re looking for, so keep reading for our top tips on the what, where, when, and why of storage unit locks.
Short-Term vs. Long-Term Storage
If you only plan to keep your items in storage for a mont or so, a sturdy padlock will probably suffice. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, if you’re using short-term storage, you might be in and out of your unit more frequently, making a simple and accessible lock more convenient. Secondly, the risk of theft or damage lowers with the shorter duration of your stay.
If you’re storing your items for an extended period, keep your things safe with a high-quality lock that is a bit more robust in terms of its resistance to tampering and theft. We’ll get into the different types of locks below.
Types of Locks for Storage Units
Locks come in all shapes and sizes, in keyed, combination, and Bluetooth varieties, and in differing levels of quality. A few of the most common categories of locks are below.
- Padlocks
Padlocks are one of the most common types of locks. But while they’re a great choice for temporary arrangements, the exposed design of most padlocks leaves them vulnerable to tampering. - Disc Locks
Disc locks are often considered the most secure option for long-term storage due to their hidden locking mechanism. Featuring a disc-shaped design that hides most of the bolt from view, disc locks are harder to break because the bolt can’t easily be cut, drilled, or pried apart. - Chain locks
While chain locks can do in a pinch, we don’t recommend them for securing a storage unit for a couple of reasons. One, they’re the easiest type of lock to break with a good pair of bolt cutters. And two, they’re meant to be wrapped or used on something where their length is an advantage, like securing a bike. - DaVinci Locks
DaVinci locks are combination disc locks that we use on our vacant units. You’ll also notice a DaVinci lock on your unit if your account is past due. Access codes are provided by text and email, so no matter what day or time you rent with us, you can get immediate access to your unit during our access hours. Text the phone number on the back of the lock, and the automated system will either provide you with a code to access your unit for the very first time or give you a link to pay your balance to regain access. Once you’re in, simply return the DaVinci lock to the dropbox found on-site and secure your unit with your own lock.
Buying a Storage Unit Lock
When shopping around for the best storage unit lock for your needs, you’re going to want to focus on quality materials and construction. Cheap, low-quality locks like the ones you find at dollar stores can leave you vulnerable to theft or lock failure.
Additional Security Measures
In addition to choosing the right lock for your storage unit, there are a few other things you can do to make sure your stuff will be safe for the long term.
- Choose a secure location: Opt for a trusted name in storage and choose a facility in a well-lit area fully equipped with the latest security features. Our locations are fully fenced in, and many have a mechanized gate, securely accessible with a randomized and personal 6-digit PIN for entry. They’re also fitted with 24-hour video surveillance. Several of our locations also feature storage units with individual alarms installed for additional protection.
- Purchase insurance: Protect your belongings against theft, damage, or natural disasters with insurance coverage.
- Take an inventory: Keep a detailed inventory of your stored items, especially for high-value items. It can be helpful to descriptions, serial numbers, and photos. This will help you identify missing or damaged items and file insurance claims.
- Regular visits: Visit your storage unit from time to time to check in on your belongings and ensure that everything is as it should be.
Choosing the right lock for your storage unit is an important part of keeping all your stuff safe and secure while you have it stashed. There are choices aplenty, so determining the best option really comes down to how long you plan to store your items and the level of security you need. But no matter what, investing in a high-quality lock and taking additional security measures is always worth it for the peace of mind it provides.
